Modern Recruiting Tips

August 2019

If you are looking for a change of scenery in your career, the job market is rich with an abundance of opportunity. But what does that mean for hiring managers facing thinner talent pools than usual?

As recruiters, it is our role to create as much depth as possible in a given talent pool. One of the trends we are seeing is that it is increasingly more challenging to attract candidates moving laterally due to the bountiful job market. So, while candidates are finding a multitude of options available to them, we are considering this a “tight” market for hiring managers and recruiters with positions to fill.

Recently, we sourced for an open Executive role. While we were able to identify several people currently or previously holding the desired title, it was difficult to get them into process. The reasons were varied, from not wanting to relocate to demanding a pay scale that was above the budgeted amount from the agency. Candidates have a choice when the market is strong and can afford to wait or negotiate for better terms. While our client wanted a seasoned Executive to step into the role, as recruiters, we must understand market behavior and set the expectations around strategy accordingly.

This is a time for hiring managers to look closely at candidates who are ready to take that next step in their career. There is a changing of the guard taking place over time and hiring managers should evaluate their culture and prepare their agency to bring greener candidates on board with a structure in place to assist them in climbing the next rung of the career ladder. This benefits agencies in their long-term staffing objectives and allows new employees to grow into the role and develop required skills over a period-of-time.

While hiring managers can discern which candidates are ready to make the next jump in their career, recruiters support this effort by dedicating blocks of time sourcing for prospects that fit the ideal candidate profile. Our value shines during times such as these, where the market is tight, and agencies need talent. Candidate pools should be filled with a depth of talent and diversity. K&A Recruiting strives to bring a modern recruiting philosophy to the public sector that both employers and candidates find seamless and transparent.
