Closed

The District

The South Tahoe Public Utility District (“District”) was established on September 28, 1950, (pursuant to Section 9 of “The Public Utility District Act”) with the purpose of supplying drinking water and providing sewage collection, treatment, and export to protect Tahoe’s delicate ecosystem.  The District’s vision is to maintain a dynamic organization that can quickly and proactively meet an ever increasing environment of regulations and scarce resources.  The District has a mission of furnishing its customers with reliable water and wastewater services, and providing those services safely, efficiently, and cost effectively.

Since 1989, to improve reliability, the District has completely replaced its headquarters building, Laboratory, Headworks, Biosolids Handling, Disinfection, and Final Pumping facilities at the WWTP, as well as export pipeline within the Tahoe Basin.  Ongoing CIP programs for the wastewater system include upgrades to collection system lift stations, concrete structure rehabilitation at the WWTP, recycled water pump station upgrades, and new recycled water irrigation facilities in Alpine County.

The District provides potable water to approximately 80% of the South Lake Tahoe area from a network of groundwater wells.  Ongoing CIP programs on the water system include firefighting infrastructure upgrades consisting primarily of upsizing water lines, and completing flow meter installations for approximately half of the residences in the service area that are still unmetered.

The Budget

The adopted 2014/15 fiscal year budget includes a total water and sewer operating budget of $22.5 Million and a capital project budget of $16.6 Million.  The projected ten-year engineered capital project budget is $103.6 Million.
